Ito Family's Dining Table, Trick Spin Ice Yo-Yo, copyright NTV

In the early twenty aughts, Nippon TV’s Tuesday night favorite across Japan was Ito-ke no shokutaku (The Ito Family's Dining Table). The show gave ideas for things to do at home based on viewer-submitted tips and tricks which they called urawaza. For example, the show demonstrated how to make toys out of recycled material, tips for cleaning or folding clothes, and how to cook certain dishes. In an episode that aired August 10, 2004, a cast member secretly made ice cream (unknown to the viewers until the end) at the same time they were performing the Gravity Pull and Forward Pass tricks with a large yo-yo. When they finished yo-yoing, they revealed the ice cream that was made inside the yo-yo. This demonstration was Japan's introduction to the Spin Ice yo-yo.

The Nippon TV show aired in Japan from 1997 to 2007.

If you have nine minutes and 20 seconds of your life that you don't want back, check out Spin Ice yo-yo video made by a user! If you want to understand the video's Japanese subtitles, use a mobile device with the Google Translate app in Camera mode. Otherwise, the video scenes are fairly straightforward and understandable on their own.

Review on Amazon Japan
3.0 out of 5 stars Don't expect performance as an ice cream maker. It's interesting as a topic.

"This is a product for a one-shot story where you can make ice cream by playing with a yo-yo. You cool the internal refrigerant in the freezer, add common ice cream ingredients, yo-yo for about 10 minutes, and the ice cream is ready. That's okay because you can actually make a decent ice cream.

The biggest problem is the amount that can be done. The instructions recommend 30 grams on each side of the yo-yo, or about two tablespoons each, for a total of 60 grams. It looks like it can fit more, but if you add more, the center won't solidify.

Just for this, 10 hours of cooling plus 10 minutes of yo-yoing are spent. The coolant melts after one use, so if you want to make more, you'll have to start over by refreezing the two ice packs. It's clearly not built to produce quantities. If you live in a household with siblings, you should buy more than one to avoid fighting. Regardless of whether it's worth it or not…

Its performance as a yo-yo varies considerably due to the liquid ice cream ingredients inside it. It may not be a problem for those who are used to it, but it is quite difficult for those who are not comfortable playing with normal yo-yos. Try your best to spin for 10 minutes. Also, when loaded with ingredients, it weighs more than 300 grams, which is about five times the weight of a typical yo-yo. Don't tie it to your fingers, instead connect it to disposable chopsticks, and do it by switching hands or taking turns.

Although this product has a lot of problems, I think it's a product that will give you a refreshing feeling of how even just a little change in the way you make ice cream can make it more interesting, so if you're an ice cream maker fanatic or a yo-yo fanatic, it's worth having one. I think.

It's labeled as a product related to "Ito Family's Dining Table," but other than using a yo-yo, it's made in the same way as a regular ice cream maker, so I'm not sure what the "trick" is.

There was no problem with the one I purchased, but it is a very old product and is used for food, so please check for damage or coolant leaks before purchasing."

Original retail price: $10 USD.
